Children's Murals and Art
|
You never get to be a child twice, Children's Mural (20' x 10') San painted this for the Crisis Center of Miller, Indiana, a Safe Place for children. She gave this as a gift to heal and uplift the many hundreds of children who will be seeking refuge there. It shows many children of different races doing innocent childlike things such
as fishing, butterfly catching and gazing in the water at their reflections and the fish just underneath the surface. The top of the mural wall had a very large security light in the way…….so she made it into a big dragonfly that is carrying a banner across the top saying, ‘You never get to be a child… twice.’ Hence, the reflections of the children in the water…twice.” Children's
murals are obviously fun and full of curiosity. It was a wonder experience watching the looks on the kids faces soften as they would walk by this children’s mural three times a day on the way to the cafeteria. I had the pleasure of meeting the staff that takes care of the children here. They are all wonderful human beings that care about the kids and go above and beyond to
see that they are safe. |
Curling Dandelions, Children's Mural (4 ft. by 3 ft.)
|
As I was growing up in Northwest Indiana, my mom showed me how to take dandelions stems, split them long ways and tear them into thin strips and place the strips in water and watch them curl the minute they hit the water. We could spend half a day making squiggles and loved every minute of it! When I wanted to do this children's
mural painting, I was in Florida and needed to phone my mother in Indiana, to look outside to see if there were any dandelions in the empty lot next door to her. I asked her to then go pick as many as she could, and ship them to me overnight for I needed to see my little girl models, actually curling these stems in person, so I could have an authentic experience. She sent them UPS overnight
and I got my friends little girls together that next day and had them curl dandelion stems and I painted this from that experience. This is a painting I did to honor that tradition passed down for many generations. |
Unicorn and mother, Children's Mural (4' x 5')
|
This painting was done for a client's wife as a surprise Christmas present several years ago. I met them at the Taste of Bonita food and events as I had a booth there representing my artwork and the husband called me the next day to commission the painting. Even though she was an adult, she loved the childlike style of unicorns
in a painting. When I delivered this to their door, and came to this house for the first time, it was a modest, little house in Bonita Springs, Florida and I thought I might at first, be at the wrong house for it was quite small and not like most of the homes of clients I paint for. I know how much this gentleman paid me to create this one of a kind piece for his wife and I did not
expect to deliver it here. When I knocked on the door, I entered and was so delighted to see all their little grandchildren lined up on the floor in this tiny living room by the Christmas tree to view my painting as I brought it in and set it against the wall. These kids were from 1 to about 6 years old, all sitting with their hands folded on their laps so proper and well behaved. His wife was so happy
with her gift and he was so proud to give it to her. I was so humbled by this experience and what he must of sacrificed to pay for this gift for his wife, that I tear up every time I tell the story. |
